Interlaken Walking Tour Guide

The Interlaken Walking Tours were established in 2014 and are part of Outdoor Interlaken. We continue the interview series with Alessandra!

What is your name and where are you from?

My name is Alessandra Martinelli and I’m from Matten.

Where do you call home these days?

That’s a hard question since I basically live in two places at the moment. I call Matten my home since my family lives there but I also call Lyss home since I spend most of my time there. So basically “Home is where your Wifi connects automatically” is applicable in my case.

How does the first hour of your day look like?

Well, I would like to say: Get up early, eat healthy breakfast, work out, shower and get ready for the day. BUT: I either wake up too late or spend the first hour on my phone scrolling through social media, let’s be real here.

How did you become a guide at Interlaken Walking Tours?

I have friends from High School who are Tour Guides and saw on Facebook that Interlaken Walking Tours was hiring. I decided to take my shot since I love speaking English, meeting new people from all over the world and show people my beautiful region. So I did my first tour this May and have been doing tours a few times a week ever since, so I’m basically a newbie-Guide.

What in your opinion is so special about Interlaken?

Interlaken brings in everything you need in a place: Adventure, beauty, and convenience. I mean, if you stand in the middle of Interlaken and you look around, you’re surrounded by the mountains, the lakes are really close and if you still wanna leave, you can go everywhere by train, if it’s up a mountain or just far far away…

What is the scariest situation you got yourself into?

I went skiing a few years ago and the weather wasn’t really cooperating. The fog was so dense that you couldn’t see the hand in front of your face and I ended up breaking my leg. I was worried that the people who were “rescuing” me wouldn’t find me. That must have been the scariest thing that has happened to me so far.

What is the most memorable expedition you have made?

I went to Dubai this spring break which was awesome. There, we went into the desert which is the complete opposite to Interlaken. I ended up having Sand everywhere though… so I had something to remind me of the desert even when I came back home.

What is the longest period you’ve been without a shower?

I’d say about 5 days when I had the chicken pox a few years back (I was 15, already almost 6ft/1.80m so I had a LOT of chicken pox to deal with). So it’s kinda excused I guess

If you would take a guy on a date and want to show him your favorite spot, where would you go to?

I’d take him up to the Meielisalp because the view over the lake of Thun from up there is beautiful.

Apart from working for Interlaken Walking Tours, what is your favorite thing to do in Switzerland?

As weird as it sounds, I sometimes like to just sit on a train and go anywhere I’d like. The train rides are so beautiful here and you can get to the other side of the country in 2-3h!

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Somewhere in an office working in marketing, having traveled the world a bit more and starting my own family (or started it already)

If you were a city which one would you be and why?

I think I’d say I’d be Chicago (which is one of my favorite cities I’ve ever visited). Chicago has tall buildings (I’m basically a skyscraper), also more quiet areas (since I like to just be alone sometimes), keeps up with American traditions (as much as I like to keep in touch with my Italian and Swiss background) but is also very international (since I like to talk to people from all over the world and like to travel).

Thanks for your time, what are you off to do now?

I’m off to spend some time with my family who lives on the other side of Switzerland and then I’m off guiding a tour.
